Leg Vein Removal Procedures

Vein removal procedures are performed for both cosmetic reasons and for medical reasons. Cosmetic therapies are the most common procedures performed for spider veins. Sclerotherapy and laser therapy are the most common spider vein procedures performed. Asclera is a common agent used for spider vein sclerotherapy.

For larger varicose veins, either plastic surgery is performed (referred at as micro- phlebectomy or vein stripping) or sclerotherapy. Varithena is commonly utilized for the sclerotherapy ablation of varicose veins.

Laser Leg Vein Removal

Laser leg vein removal is one of the more common ways to rid your legs of painful or unsightly varicose veins. The laser procedure used treat varicose veins is referred to as EndoVenous Laser Treatment (ie EVLT). It also goes by the name of laser ablation or endovenous ablation. The most common type of broken leg veins that are treated with this therapy are called saphenous veins. This laser treatment has a success rate of over 95% in curing the diseased varicose vein condition. The EVLT procedure is performed in our Vein Center under light sedation.

Sclerotherapy Leg Vein Procedure

Another common vein removal procedure invovles instilling liquid medication into the vein lumen through a needle injection.  This is referred to as sclerotherapy.  This procedure is very effective and allows patients to avoid more invasive procedures such as surgical removal of varicose veins.  Sclerotherapy can be utilized on varicose veins of all sizes and types, from the smallest spider veins to larger varicose veins that are bulging.

Vein Ablation Therapy

Vein ablation therapy invovles a catheter-based intervention to seal or close an abdormal vein.  When heat energy such as laser or radiofrequency heat is utilized then this is referred to as thermal ablation.  The two most commonly utilized forms of thermal ablation are laser ablation and radiofrequency ablation with the ClosureFast device.  When a medication such as a foam sclerosant or Varithena is used then this is referred to as endovenous chemical ablation.
